It's the tired, overdone Burton-goth aesthetic that did it for me, but you're definitely not wrong with that comparison.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-23 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Same for me.
I can't really watch or rewatch any Burton movie now. I'm just done with him.
At least for now. Maybe in the future I will become nostalgic of its aesthetic and revisit his works, but I was never super iper invested in it to begin with.

I continue to love Nightmare before Christmas, though. That's the only one I save.

I think the Burton aesthetic is over done for a generation or two of us. There's a bunch of kids growing up now that probably are eating it up the way we did. Also, whatever happened to Emily the Strange?

Ironically, I felt it wasn't Burton ENOUGH! It felt like knock-off Burton. A suggestion of Burton. What happened, man?

I stuck with it until the end to see if I was right about the "mysteries" (I basically was, just vaguer on the details) and it was ok but that was about it. It came across as it probably wouldn't have got the green light without the Addams connection.

But man am I confused about what the big fucking deal was about that dance. It was basically just Thriller? Also I'm not sure if I like this version of Wednesday the character overall. Felt a bit like all she did was spend most of the series with her chin tucked into her chest and her eyes constantly raised to the sky. Poor girl must've had epic eye-strain headaches.

15 year old me would've been all over it though, which I guess is the point.

A lot of the dance moves were cribbed from Lisa Loring's Wednesday, which I appreciated, despite the... whole burton-y mess

All I can think about when I see that dance is how they made her perform when she had Covid, so it doesn't give me the awe it does for everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-22 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you're wrong at all. But I really liked Wednesday and the way that Jenna Ortega portrayed her, so I found it fun for that - basically it's like someone took a completely generic Netflix genre soap, and added one really interesting weird out of place character to it.

Would it be better if the whole thing was original and good, yes, obviously

(Anonymous) 2023-02-23 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I did like how the main character was portrayed.

I usually like anything Addams but this didn't do it for me at all and I've never seen Monster High. I liked the book Wicked but it's apparently totally different from the musical.

Genuine question: Did you like the recent CGI animated movies?

Didn't see the second one. I liked some things about the first one although the Martha Stewart parody seemed like it belonged in a different movie and the non-Addams people were drawn to look more freaky than the Addamses which didn't feel right at all, for example the girl whom Wednesday kind of sort of made friends with had huge lips, no chin and a body like toothpicks and the bitchy girl looked like she was Beavis' sister.

HDU. Monster High is amazing. The puns.

I ended up seeing a few snippets of it when I was watching it with my cousins and the whole thing was basically made to appeal to 13 year olds that use tiktok. Also as seen by how everyone fawned over it for two seconds and then completely forgot about it.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-23 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I despise Wicked but loved Wednesday *shrug*

Kinda surprised at these comments though because it’s hugely popular and people are still raving about it. I get not liking a thing and it’s even reasonable that a small niche space like FS would amass a disproportionate number of outliers. But pretending that everyone forgot about this or that it didn’t break any ground is bizarre.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-23 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
IDK, I didn't hate it but I have to admit that I haven't been seeing a lot of Wednesday content anywhere.

Maybe some of that is the inevitable effect of the Internet becoming more and more algorithmically silo'd, but I honestly would expect to at least see *some* of it. I do see some fics on AO3 I guess but even there I'd hardly call it a megafandom.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-23 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
It’s probably the algorithms. I see Wednesday stuff all over tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook. People IRL still reference it. And I’m not on TikTok and don’t have kids but even I’m aware the dance is their most popular challenge and has been since the week the show came out.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-23 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
The dance *was* huge when it came out but I feel like it's been much less of a thing recently.

I’ve seen a lot of generic “sunny girl/broody girl” shipping art for it.

Yeah, Jenna Ortega did a good job with the role she was given, and the actor who played the principle was solid, but beyond that I found it painfully teenage and very mediocre. Not "yay fun" mediocre, but tedious and annoying mediocre. And that's if I ignore how bad of a job it did at being true to the essence of any of the Addams Family iterations that came before it.

I'm just here to advocate for a very cute show if you're over Wednesday (which I'm told is a really good show as well).

I always wanted to be in a Burton movie when I was a kid, but then I realized there was no one who really looked like me or my friends & family in his movies lol (black/latino/mixed). So I'm glad Jenna Ortega got the role and I'd apparently doing a great job :)

(Anonymous) 2023-02-23 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Another show I keep saying I'll watch but probably never will.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-24 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
It was very... teenager-y. Like every scene and line of dialogue existed to show how cool, clever, and capable Wednesday was compared to everyone else. I was a little bummed by how much I disliked it, because I love gothy Burton aesthetics and spooky stuff.
