Okay.

I guess I've never really understood what's wrong with being basic (except for the fact that people use it as an insult). And if she's extremely good at what she does, why should she do anything differently? While I absolutely think her super-fans can get really defensive, I also think that's pretty natural - I get super-defensive of the things I really like when other people are derisive about them, especially when those other people imply (or state) that there's something wrong with me for liking those things (or the way I like them). A lot of people feel the same, I would assume.

This. I am not a Taylor Swift fan (there's a few songs I enjoy but I don't like, seek her music out etc), but holy shit the rabid, "She's basiccccc." foaming at the mouth like it's terrible to like things that are popular (for a REASON).

NAYRT

I admit I have too many experiences with being ostracized by super basic people to cut them or the idea altogether any slack. The Black Sheep Effect is definitely in full force for me, and I'm guessing it's in play for others as well.

AYRT Oh there's definitely bullshit on both sides of the grass, nonny, I'm sorry people were buttholes to you. :(

As a pumpkin spice fan, I feel this.

Basic is such a weird insult tbh. It's mostly just women having a go at each other for liking different sets of popular things.

in this case OP is saying that she's not artistically pushing the envelope in any way and her fans are saying she's is. like...for once basic is relevant to the discussion OP wants to have.

Maybe that's what OP is claiming. I don't think the vast majority of her fans are actually claiming she is pushing the envelope, though. I think that's a pretty heavy misunderstanding of what they are saying, which for the most part is that she's really good at making the specific type of music she makes, and she's really good at evolving just enough as both an artist and a performer to keep a pretty astounding number of people interested at any given time. Those are certainly the main forms of praise I see fan circles heaping upon her. Another type of praise I see from fans is "Her lyrics are so relatable!" which pretty clearly is meant as a personal statement, not universal fact, regardless of the enthusiastically sweeping phrasing. I'm ace/aro and I have absolutely no problem with someone claiming Taylor Swift writes incredibly relatable lyrics. I get it. I understand what they mean, even if I don't personally relate to more than a couple of her songs.

hmm, I mostly agree with the relatable talk, that's mostly what I hear, and also fans that think her lyrics suck but they like them, but I disagree that there aren't people calling her lyrics genuis. There are plenty. Sometimes you get annoyed at one group lol.

But why single out Tailor Swift? Not like this isn't the same for just about every pop star. And at least she does write her own songs.

Re: Okay.

Because unlike most of the other artists this would apply to, Taylor Swift’s fans are ridiculously easily offended by someone saying that maybe she’s not that deep.

Have you MET ... just about every other stan? I don't even like Taylor Swift but maybe people react more sensitively because her haters take such glee in shitting all over her?

Re: Okay.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-23 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's true, and I don't have any particular love or hate for Taylor Swift (I like some of her songs that happen to end up getting a lot of airtime but I'm not buying her stuff or listening to whole albums), Taylor fans can probably chill, since it's not like she's fighting an uphill battle to be professionally recognized or to sell records.

It's like stanning for Microsoft or some other successful, billion-dollar company. It doesn't matter if some people think it sucks.

“I think she’s overrated” isn’t shitting on her though and it’s not particularly gleeful. Taylor Swift’s fanbase is just that sensitive. Every fandom has stans, but in most of them, that level of aggressive defensiveness is considered fringe in the portion of the fan base that is over 18.

I mean yeah - simple food cooked well is an enjoyable experience, and simple music performed well is enjoyable likewise.

Don't get me wrong, I love experimental stuff that plays with the genre, but... I respect simple things done well too.
