The secret implies that OP is talking about situations in which people say this sentence as a response to criticism, not as the criticism itself

So OP or someone is saying "this show should be darker and more convoluted in some way" and someone is saying "not every show has to be Game of Thrones" in response

But even if someone were to say this about a show, responding to nothing in particular, it... still wouldn't mean either of the things OP thinks it means??

Oh, no, you're right, that is what they're saying. Well, I agree that the secret makes much less sense that way, lol. I personally usually see "not every show needs to be Game Of Thrones" leveled as a criticism of darker shows, not a defense of lighter shows.

I mean, I sort of get what OP means - I guess they have in mind a very specific situation where a show is being criticized for very specific problems with the plot, characters and writing, and people in response are saying that the problems don't matter because the show is light-hearted and positive? But.... that's such an incredibly specific scenario and OP really kind of skips over a lot of the intervening steps.

I might be too tired to understand it clearly, but my first impression was that the people saying "not every show needs to be GoT" was that, in their opinion, not every show needed to be as "high quality" as GoT and the OP was disagreeing with the sentiment of GoT (or a fantasy show which is dark) being the only measure of a good quality fantasy show.

No, I'm talking about situations where someone says "this show has bad writing" and gets that line thrown at them. No asking for darker tone. But since the show they're talking about is usually lighter than GoT, it apparently gets assumed that that's what they mean anyway. Or alternatively they're chastised for expecting quality in non-dark show.
