"Not every show needs to be Game of Thrones" means "shows can be good without needing to be dark and convoluted like GoT." Not "light-hearted shows are doomed to be bad"

I am trying to decide if I want to get takeout or just eat some boxed mac and cheese. I always find it hard to justify takeout even though I have the money for it.

One, if the point is to say that shows can be good without being convoluted and dark, that makes no sense as a criticism of a specific show. If the point is that you can have shows that are lighthearted and good... OK, that's fine! But how is that a point of criticism about a show that *is* convoluted and dark? How does this turn into a problem with a specific show under discussion?

And two, people use the criticism really generally and broadly. There's absolutely times where people say this about a show and it's completely baffling how the show is supposed to be like GOT.
