I'm going to theorize and speculate that it's because non-fandom culture believes in "he's bullying you, that means he likes you!" uncritically. And believing in that social norm, there's no need to go any further into explaining it then that.

Fandom culture believes that too, but only when it fits their ships. When it happens in a ship they don't like (usually because it rivals theirs) they suddenly know it's bad.

*Is* it necessarily bad when it comes to fictional relationships, though?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-25 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm anon upthread, nayrt, but I'll say that maybe they meant 'bad' as in 'bad writing,' not bad as in 'toxic or unhealthy.' I could be wrong though!

It’s treated bad regardless of whether or not it actually is and the other anon is entirely correct that shippers will overlook it being ‘bad’ if they like the ship while lambasting another ship doing the exact same trope, like I’ve seen this happen all the time in fandoms.

I wonder if this is a situation where the lack of editors in fanfic is a benefit. Like, I think enemies-to-rivals benefits so much from having space to breath so we can see the characters' relationship - I wonder if published writers have an editor on their should screaming that they need to cut all that shit out so the book is shorter.

As someone into enemies to lovers and rivalmance and seen how often shipfic for them skip over the work, or be set after they're already together, or make them AU so some of the friction is handwaved away, I don't think fanfic writers are likely to be better at it. Easier to find because of tags that let you know better what you're getting, sure.

I have to agree. As much as I like rivals to lovers stuff, often enough fics aren't doing the work.
