As someone into enemies to lovers and rivalmance and seen how often shipfic for them skip over the work, or be set after they're already together, or make them AU so some of the friction is handwaved away, I don't think fanfic writers are likely to be better at it. Easier to find because of tags that let you know better what you're getting, sure.

I have to agree. As much as I like rivals to lovers stuff, often enough fics aren't doing the work.
