Sorry, I should have said that it can mean that. There are a few different instances where I’ve seen it used. Very broadly, it’s been

A) as a response to someone complaining because they think a show isn’t grimDark enough,

B) as a complaint when a previously lighter show starts to turn grimDark.

Exactly those two scenarios are the ones I've seen it in, and the phrase in both those situations just plain doesn't mean what the secret OP thinks it means. So it's very confusing

The secret doesn’t make sense to me either. All I can figure is that the OP is confused, or mistranslated something into English.

DA - Those are also the only two situations (broadly) where I've seen this argument used. It's always in response to either "this clearly lighthearted/comedic/trying to be mid-series Xena show needs to take itself more seriously" or "this plot twist where it turns out all the good guys were secretly evil and also now the only way to save the world is by supporting a child trafficking ring really didn't need to be a thing."

The thing that comes to mind most recently with this argument is "Andor is bad because it's trying to be Game of Thrones, not every show needs to be Game of Thrones"

I saw it here and I saw it on Reddit. Also, this gets thrown at Picard, too, for being too violent and dark for a Star Trek show. People just don't like dark shows in their franchises.

This bugs me because both franchises have plenty of stuff to watch (although that is a relatively new development for Star Wars) so when someone doesn't like any particular installment I want to just shrug and say "So wait five minutes and there will be something new and in the meantime enjoy all the rest that already exists." I think it's a good thing if both franchises invest in variety rather than only walking the same path over and over. I won't like all of it but that's not an actual problem.
