Person1: I didn't like this show because it's poorly written
Person2: Not every show has to be GoT grimdark you know

How would you interpret person2's response? Keep in mind that person1 never said anything about the show's tone, much less how they wanted it to be. Personally I can see two options:
A) Person2 thinks GoT grimdark = good writing, therefore you can have either lighthearted or well written, so person1 is dumb for expecting both.
B) Person2 assumes person1 thinks GoT grimdark = good writing, despite them never giving any indication of it, simply because they're criticizing a lighter toned show.

This line is constantly used to defend bad writing. This secret is about that. I know that "Not every show needs to be Game of Thrones" is supposed to mean "shows can be good without needing to be like GoT" but it's almost never used that way. It's more often used to shut down (usually) legitimate criticism about writing quality.

Sounds like you need to find a new circle. The phrase is used constantly yes but never in the context you say it is. Reading over the replies to your secret should be all the confirmation you need.

I've seen that phrase used in that context many times right here on FS.
