The funny thing is, those types of female characters get bashed for being "Mary-Sues" just as much as the female fighters.

It's kind of scary- the idea of the 'unfulfilled woman' being the strong, independant type. The whole thing is a real throwback to the 50's, when women that wanted to be poets and doctors and not have children were considered neurotic and unstable.
Supposedly our generation prides itself on being so pro-this and liberal-that, but when we look at what these Sue writers and character bashers are saying and doing, it doesn't match with our 'image' at all. WTF, (wo)man?
