IMO it’s exactly like that in the original campaign too. I’ve personally wondered if it’s because there was more buildup that happened before they started doing the actual play show for an audience, but either way I don’t get why they wouldn’t take the opportunity to fill that in a little more in the animated show. It just falls so weirdly flat next to the places where the characters and relationships really do shine.

My imagination or does he look like Eric the Cavalier (Dungeons & Dragons)?

IMO it also helps that Pike/Scanlan is a more dynamic kind of relationship--their character types can play off of each other really well and their individual growth , especially Scanlan's, factors well into the interpersonal realm. Whereas for both Vax and Keyleth, their growth is very focused outward, away from their party members. Without spoilers, they're going from stuck-to-my-sister and shy-unconfident-dork to Matron's Champion and Ashari leader--their relationship type has its tropes and highlights, but fundamentally they're looking /elsewhere/ more than at each other.

Tbh, most of the romance felt like that on CR for me. Like the players had a lot of internal thoughts on their characters that they didn't actually get across on screen.

Oh yeah totally. Love the show otherwise but shoving everyone into het relationships is the worst part of it and Vax/Keyleth is the most boring of those.

There was slightly more to it during campaign play. It was the first in character romance any of the cast had done in a TTRPG and it wasn't smooth. However! Vax/Keyleth happened which gave us Vex/Percy and Pike/Scanlan and all of the other romances in later campaigns. I'll forgive them one awkward nerd romance.

In general, having watched the live play, I think Vax does the physical part of relationships fine, but emotional investment is awkward for him. Like being emotionally invested in anyone other than Vex is new to him.

I am sad that Gilmore/Vax didn't get to be more than flirtation.
