ngl I'm an aromantic asexual and on the odd occasion the concept of having a relationship crosses my mind, I wind up thinking the same thing. I'd much rather stay with my fandom favs and indulge in their relationships than go through all the hassle of attempting to have a 'real' relationship.

Because... honestly... when I think of all the people I know IRL and about their relationships? It really does just seem like SUCH a hassle. No thanks for me.

Idk it just feels like having an OTP satisfies fundamentally different desires than having a partner? Like... When I have an OTP I'm not picturing myself as one of the characters being in an ideal relationship.

My personal response to this secret is complicated.

On the one hand, I very much feel you. My OTPs basically fill the role of romantic/sexual relationships in my life. I get/have gotten so much romantic and sexual fulfillment from them, and emotional fulfillment more generally, too, to an extent.

Like, I am under absolutely no delusions about the fact that they are fictional and that that makes them qualitatively different from real life in some pretty fundamental ways. But I do still genuinely love my OTPs. Like, if something were to make it so that I could never engage with my OTP again, I would grieve, and the grief would be just as real as any grief is.

But OTOH, it's impossible for me not to also be acutely aware of the areas of fulfillment that my OTPs can never touch. Like...other people are immutable to us in certain ways. They are their own, and we are our own, and our connection to them is a connection of like to like, and that's just the nature of things. We can't experience them from the inside, or make them be different than they are, or make them stay the same, or make them show us the parts we want to see, or make them stay. And all of that makes relating to other people a very, very mixed, sometimes downright shitty, and often painfully mundane experience--even when they're people we love. But it's also what makes us not-alone when we're with them. And the older I get, the clearer it becomes that having people to be not-alone with--people I'm compatible enough with that I can be glad to be not-alone with them--is a profound need that I have. And a need that my OTPs cannot adequately fulfill.

However, I do have two very important caveats! One is that nobody says the people you are not-alone with have to be romantic or sexual partners. There are tons of aro/ace people out there who get all the emotional fulfillment they need via platonic relationships (with or without shipping on the side)! I have no idea if this can also be true for Allo people; they'll have to speak for themselves on that one.

And two is that I am entirely open to the possibility that some people really just don't have that same interpersonal need, and never will, and that's okay!

So I'm really not arguing with your point, or with your experience. I think it's totally valid. My own feelings on the matter are similar, but also more complicated, is the long and the short of it.

I don't think these need to be, or can be, compared to each other so directly. The secret sounds like OP feels enjoying the fandom ships they're into and enjoying IRL partners must be mutually exclusive and I'm not sure why. Just like with hobby or media preferences, you can find IRL partners that appreciate the same ships as you do in the same ways, and then you have someone to enjoy things you already enjoy with.

Why not both?

If you're curious, and you've never run into this term before, you could try looking up "aegosexuality." Your feelings and preferences are no more or less valid regardless of whether you are or are not any type of asexual or aromantic, and it's totally fine to not know or not care, too. But judging by what you've expressed in your secret, if you are ace then aegosexuality is likely to click with you, since us aegosexuals really enjoy us some fictional sex and romance (without imagining ourselves in the scenarios we enjoy).

Yes, the term is long and abstruse. No, we don't generally expect people to know it and use it about us. It's just a useful term within the ace/aro community, to help us express the distinct relationship we have with sex and romance, in comparison to aces/aros who are totally disinterested in sex/romance in every capacity.

I'm somewhat the same but I'm ace/aro, so not sure if that makes a difference. Sex doesn't interest me at all even in fiction but shipping fulfills any sort of romantic interest I have. The idea of myself in a romantic relationship? Definitely not. I was miserable in my past relationships because we didn't want the same things and I don't have any desire to repeat those experiences. I could maybe be interested in a queerplatonic thing someday, if I could find someone compatible, but right now even that seems like more hassle than it's worth.

IMO it’s exactly like that in the original campaign too. I’ve personally wondered if it’s because there was more buildup that happened before they started doing the actual play show for an audience, but either way I don’t get why they wouldn’t take the opportunity to fill that in a little more in the animated show. It just falls so weirdly flat next to the places where the characters and relationships really do shine.
