In what sense has it been ruined? Because you're sick of the autism "trend" or because of the Unfortunate Implications of mythical creatures based on real people who were "different" and mistreated for it? Or another reason? I think if you didn't know and didn't make the connection until you heard it explained, it's safe to say whatever creatures your books are about have very little in common with autistic people even if that's how the type of creature that inspired them came from, so you don't need to feel guilty about reading the books if that's your issue.
