Tips of sci fi episodes

(Anonymous) 2023-03-11 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm making a program for my Star Trek club. Every program has a theme and you pick Star Trek episodes that fit that theme. You are also encouraged to include one episode from another Sci-fi show that fits the theme in order to mix things up. It has to be a self contained/Aliens of the week episode obviously.

The theme I have is "Cults, Cliques, and Charismatic Leaders."

Anyone got any ideas?

I don't really know Star Trek, but this is the first scifi ep I thought of:

Stargate Atlantis 1x06 Childhood's End is about a planet where they off themselves at 24 "because Wraith won't eat children" and it's pretty cult-like and has a scheming attempted cult leader.

Ahahaha... dare I nominate that ST:TNG episode where Wesley steps in a flower bed an on alien planet where the people dress in hilarious skimpy onesies? Not exactly a cult, but a cult-like mentality.

As for non-ST suggestions:

The X-Files: "Red Museum","Gender Bender", "Die Hand Die Verletzt", "The Calusari", "Our Town", "Syzygy" "Signs & Wonders", "The Rain King", "The Field Where I Died"

...I immediately thought of The Way to Eden from TOS but I don't think you actually want to include that.

In anything.

Ever.

Unless you're MSTing it.

I wish the MST guys would do Way to Eden, it'd be hysterical!

Pretty sure it's the most MSTable TOS episode. I mean, Spock's Brain is possibly as bad, but it's bad in such a way I'm not sure it could possibly be made funnier.

I don't know, I think Joel and the Bots could do Spock's Brain, it's so kitschy!

They could probably have fun with it, I'm just not sure it could become funnier than it already is. Back when I found channels that were showing reruns, that was one week I would never miss because it made me laugh so hard. :D

As opposed to The Way to Eden which is like... secondhand embarrassment bad. >_<

...But I do wonder now how plausible it would ever be that MST3K could actually acquire the rights to Trek episodes? Then again I suppose they don't have to acquire rights in order to do Rifftrax, or so I would assume based on some of the stuff they've made them for. XD

they ripped that awful Star Wars life day thing a new one.
BTW, am I imagining things or did that guy Adam in Way to Eden look like Beavis?
pantswarrior: Spock raises an eyebrow at you. (o rly?)

SeaQuest DSV, Season 1, Episode 12, "Photon Bullet"
Feeling isolated, unwanted, and unappreciated aboard the seaQuest, Lucas visits Node Three, a communications colony populated by other teenage computer geniuses, led by legendary computer hacker Martin Clemens, aka. "Mycroft". However, Lucas soon finds himself caught up in the group's tampering with global finances – tamperings that have more motive than they appear.

Quantum Leap, Season 5, Episode 15, "Blood Moon"
Sam leaps into an eccentric artist named Lord Nigel Corrington who lives a strange, Gothic lifestyle. He must deal with Al's conviction that Sam's host is a hundreds-year-old vampire, while trying to keep Corrington's potentially walking dead acolytes, Victor (Ian Buchanan) and Claudia (Deborah Moore), from killing his host's new wife, Alexandra (Shae D'lyn), as a blood sacrifice.

I have some Star Trek TOS episodes to recommend.

"Space Seed" - The first appearance of Khan Noonian Singh, a very charismatic leader with a cultlike following.

"The City on the Edge of Forever" - A charismatic young woman holds the future of the Earth in her hands.

"And the Children Shall Lead" - Young people fall prey to a malignant charismatic leader.

"The Way to Eden" - A charismatic leader, his cult and a search for paradise.

At least one of the episodes from the Circle arc in Deep Space Nine. That would fit with all three of those.

For the episode from another series, maybe “The Deconstruction of Our Falling Stars” from Babylon 5?
