Surprise collections

What item(s) have you found yourself collecting without intending to do so?

Mine is nail polish. I have a ridiculous amount of nail polish. I doubt I'll finish a single bottle in my lifetime.

I bought one little Pote Usa Loppy at a con "as a treat" a few years back because I kept seeing them around and they were very cute.

I now have about 30. -_-

Art supplies, specifically point media. ( Point media are things you can draw with that have a point, like pens, pencils, magic markers, crayons, etc. )

Pretty biscuit tins. I got a couple with the biscuits in and put them up on top of my kitchen cupboards. My mother gave me a couple more that she didn't have room for. Then I started picking them up at opp shops...I stopped at a couple of dozen but for a while it was touch and go that they'd take over the whole kitchen.

Oh same-- I bought one that was Star Wars, and then I bought one that was a koala, and THEN I bought a gingerbread man... I used to have a phone booth one, iirc, that got dented and left behind in a move, but I have the Star Wars, koala, and gingerbread man, plus two small 'sewing tins'. I keep meaning to actually make them into project tins, especially since the round ones are perfect for small embroidery hoops, but... well. If I was living alone, they'd probably take over the place, with some for projects and some for biscuits.

(the gingerbread man still has biscuits in him)

Asian tea cups/bowls (mainly Japanese, some Chinese) and Sake sets. I always liked them but I didn't originally set out to really collect them. But now I have quiet a few and I love them. I don't really drink a lot of green tea though so I don't use them as much as I'd like.

Houseplants. I used to have an anti-green thumb and never was particularly interested in potted plants and suddenly I have several. Not nearly as much as some people because i dont have the space and don't like clutter too much but for me it's quite a lot compared to some years ago.

Eyeliners. I gave my friend 10 of those because I wear eyeliner maybe once a year. Makeup too, but this has been the worst case.
Also, cosplays and "convention clothes" in general. Even though I haven't been to a single convention since 2020, but I own about 30-40 of these. Some pieces I manage to wear casually, but most are just sitting in my closet. Because I like to own them, apparently. How's that childhood trauma going.

The classic Club Monaco Heritage Crest sweatshirts, that look like this:

https://img.shopstyle-cdn.com/sim/b4/1f/b41fe1f202f08dbfdf4338c69a58729f_best/heritage-crest-sweatshirt.jpg

They're comfy and casual, yet they make me look like I have my shit together. (Spoiler: I do not.)

It's not a huge collection. I have four. One vintage one from the late 80's, one gray one from five years ago, one lavender-gray one from 2021, and one black one from this Christmas.

I love them, but I'm not sure I'll be buying any more, because they are expensive and the quality has gone downhill recently. They were always high-quality 100% cotton, but a couple of years ago they added poly and started tweaking the fit in weird ways that nobody asked for. Now that they have poly in them, the fleece lining sheds like crazy. My apartment was covered in black fuzz for weeks after I bought my most recent one. I swear it must've lost a third of its mass from shedding fleece.

I might consider snagging another vintage one if I saw it for an uncommonly good deal, though.

Oh, those look nice! I got a Banana Republic sweatshirt recently and love it.

The wide-legged linen pants from Old Navy. I bought a black and a green pair, and now I have three black, one green, one white, one beige, and I just got a reddish pair.

These are all I wear these days, with (mostly) black t-shirts. I hope they never stop selling them.

there's all those versions of Monopoly that tie in to TV shows, why isn't there one for Boardwalk Empire? that would actually make sense!

Pajama pants. They're just so comfy. I think I have 6 pair now, maybe more. My mom just sent me a pair she found with cats on them.

OP

I'm like this with snowman patterns pajama pants/sleep shorts.

T-shirts.

I probably have more than thirty of them last time I counted them. I'm a real sucker for fandom tees as well. My latest purchases include a shirt with the G1 Transformer version of Ratchet repairing Bumblebee's severed hand, with poor 'Bee glumly holding an Energon lollipop in the other. It's gotten me quite a bunch of compliments.

Pride scarves. I'd started knitting rainbow-striped scarves a couple of years ago and now I have to KNIT ALL THE SCARVES even for lesser known identities because the stripes are pretty.

Socks.

I must have at least 40 pairs in multiple colors. My favorite brands include Gold Toe, Silver Toe, Calvin Klein, Smartwool, Gap, and Uniqlo.

Same, but with HappySocks. I have at least 40 pairs. I just can't resist.

My whole family hoards books.

We probably have enough to stock a small public library by now.

Re: Surprise collections

(Anonymous) 2023-03-12 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
SAME. We actually have a bigger private library than my town's.
The only thing is that it's manly classics, thillers (my mom hoards them) and modern Japanese literature (my field of studies).
