Ugh, this happened to me with an artist some year ago - I was really stoked about the commission and it wasn't cheap either. And then the artist completely ghosted everyone while still opening new commission spots -I never saw her finish a single of those commissions. She was suffering from mental health stuff and was quite vocal about it so I was super reluctant to ask at first because I kept thinking "what if I pressure her too much" but after about two years of nothing (and also barely any word from her, especially not without prompting) I had enough and asked for my money back. At least that worked but it was so weird to see everyone still kissing her ass even after she basically scammed countless people.

Wait, but are you saying that you tried to contact her and no word from her and it wasn't just a matter of like "life issues" or "sorry I accidentally pressed the delete button on my sales excel file and now am lost" or w/e?

So basically what happened was: She never updated anyone on her own, you had to ask her multiple times and only get half-hearted "sorry it's taking so long" messages back, if any. I think she made a total of two general "update" posts in two or three years which consisted of a)woe is me-ing and how terrible she felt that she didn't finish any commissions and how sorry she was but oh her life was so terrible atm and b) a note that she was opening new commission spots to pay for her meds. Which was pretty annoying.
She did give back the money in the end so at least that's something but she never once took the initiative to contact the people who gave her money to explain her position. Only after prompting her several times and then it was straight back to radio silence.

Huh ... unfortunately some people who can draw (?) are scammers too and just bad professionals ... but it does seem to me like a lot of people play the mental health card as an excuse for scamming others.

Which is very unfortunate. As someone who is actually diagnosed mentally ill since forever and knows the fucking struggle it is (nothing works ever) those people really fuck me up because thanks to them I have to lie and say "oh no, it's fine, nothing wrong at all" but yeah, sigh.
