Sure, but why ignore the entire first season like that?

Because back when TV wasn't a netflixesque hellscape of only two seasons and no space for character development, the first season was where you worked out the kinks. The first season of TNG was pretty bad and I like to ignore it...

Yes, season 1 and at least part of season 2 of TNG was bad. But I don't think that was true of DS9. Season 1 was good. I'd say it is the only Trek series that had a really good first season.

That is true, DS9 started off well and maintained. It just feels an awful lot like thinking a character eats only one food because it's the only thing seen on screen. Sisko had other things going on in his life both pre- and post-Picard. There's a whole seven seasons to explore.

Yes he does. Picard isn't the only thing that should be discussed when it comes to Sisko, and Picard shouldn't be brought up every time. But if we're getting into a full discussion of who Sisko is and why he is the way he is, Picard is absolutely going to come up. Wolf 359 is a pivotal moment in Sisko's life and something that helped to make him who he is.

Definitely. I'm not the secret OP, so I can't speak to their experience, I just agree that many people seem to take one piece of characterization as THE jumping off point and there's so many other things to explore that don't even need to touch on it.

Like, Sisko's major trauma and Picard's major trauma were both the SAME trauma from different sides, but I still can find plenty of meta about Picard without mentioning the Borg at all.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-14 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
it's still part of the show, it's not reasonable to expect everyone to just ignore it lmao

It's also not reasonable to focus on just the introduction to a character. There were SEVEN seasons of character development.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-14 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think peoples' characterization of Sisko is limited to just "not Picard" though. That's one element of the characterization among many. And it's reasonable for that to be one of the elements in his characterization because it shows up in the show.

If that is your experience, great! I'm sure you agree with me then that it's fairly simple to talk about Sisko without mentioning Picard at all and I'm wondering why you responded the way you did....

(Anonymous) 2023-03-14 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
People can talk about Sisko without mentioning Picard, but they aren't obligated to do so just because it's a part of his characterization that other people don't care for...

And? Where did the secret say that they CAN'T? That they were OBLIGATED?

(Anonymous) 2023-03-14 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
They’re responding to you, you nut. Not the OP of the secret.
