I search for a specific ship and start from the first page going until the last if I can, if the ship is huge and/or older I'll do the same but go to the very last page and work backards to the present to get most of the 'at the time' fic. If it's a ship I regualarly go back to look at I'll have the ship-tag bookmarked and usually several filters applied to get rid of kinks I don't like, writers I don't like, any tagged ships that irk me, that kind of thing so I can get to what I want easier.

This method has worked for me for years, it doesn't mean I don't get shit-fic it's just that I can tell if I'm going to jive with a fic in a few paragraphs so I can back-click early to find something else instead.
