I start with the ship tag on AO3, then sort by "most kudos" and start sampling fics that sound good to me. When I find one I like, I go to that author's page and see what else they've written for that pairing. If it's a big fandom, then I'll probably also try searching some recs lists and also seeing what my favorite fanfic authors have bookmarked. If it's a smaller fandom, then I'll stick with AO3 until I'm not finding anything I like anymore, and then I'll check a few rec lists to see if I missed anything.
