He chose to go, despite knowing that he was going to die. He could have chosen to resume his human life, but chose to stay ascended to another plane of existence. He still chose to leave his wife and unborn child behind for some sort of mystic destiny. It counts.

Where does it say he could have resumed his human life? My understanding was that once he went over the edge, the choice was dead or ascended (and eventually coming back). Second choice seems way better to me.

And as for choosing to go, unless you think any parent who joins the military or does anything life threatening is a deadbeat (which you'd be very, very wrong about), he's not a deadbeat for choosing to go and sacrifice himself for the universe.

Avery Brooks specifically pushed for and got a line about how Sisko could come back, precisely because he was aware of the whole deadbeat dad thing playing into stereotypes of black fathers, he knew what was going on there. He hoped that subsequent Trek would follow up on that, or maybe his character could be back for a movie, but it never happened and his well intentioned script editoring only cemented Sisko's deadbeat dad status.

AYRT Where did he have the choice of resume his human life (and not have Bajor suffer the destruction of the Prophets)? I thought his choice was Prophets or death (or, I guess, everyone else dies).
