Kirk was forced out by Carol Marcus. "I did what you asked. I stayed away. Why didn't you tell him?"

(Some people think he says, "Why didn't you tell me?", Shatner does kinda swallow the word; which would only mean Kirk didn't even know David was his son and absolves Kirk of deadbeatness as much as, or more than, staying away because he was asked to.)

David's change of attitude between his scenes with Kirk on Regula and his scenes with Kirk on the Enterprise is the change of attitude of someone who grew up not knowing until sickbay that his father stayed away because his mother made him stay away.

Also you can't be a deadbeat dad in a moneyless society. Take it from the stepfather of kids who had a deadbeat dad.
