Ugh, if it’s fic within the fandom, my first thought is the Friendship is Magic Spike/Rarity fic “For the Ones We Love.” That was so popular and so, so garbage. (A tax for bringing up shit: I liked the Spike/Rarity fic “On Pins and Needles.”)

In my fandom (Sauron/Melkor pairing), the fic is called This Game We Play. I like some of the author's other fics, and I like her writing, but that one just has nearly everyone OOC (at least in my opinion).

Back when I first got into the pairing, there was a page and a half of fics with the tag on AO3, so there wasn't a whole lot to work with. Still a smallish pairing, but a lot more variety in the shipping and a lot more variety in the fics.
