I feel like Livejournal was for communities while current social media is all about "me," in a sense. Current social media is not about collabs or chatting or sharing theories, it's about "me" marketing myself as a product, creating content, putting "myself" out there, getting those likes and that engagement that's all for the benefit of "me." It's hard to make friends or build communities because at its heart social media right now feels like it's primarily about focusing on yourself above all else.

LJ had some of that, like everyone had their own personal journal after all, but communities always felt more about "us" than "me." Even if you were putting out your own content it was still in a community setting and there was an expected back and forth. I feel like fandom has become so self-centered now, and I miss the days when we were a community.

True, same here. And this "me" has to be marketable and profitable ultimately. It's not the best experience for me either.
On the other hand, LJ had too much identity drama as well and I never liked LJ either. Tumblr and fanpages have always been more my thing.
