To a degree, I agree.

I never got into LJ because none of my school friends used it. I only walked into LJ spaces when fandom friends would direct me to their LJ spaces.

Some places allowed for anons to mingle with accounts. But in my experience, the majority of the fun was joining a "Only Fans/Only Friends" spaces and that always meant a friend would have to invite you to them.

Because I wasn't very active on LJ I never got the invites nor did I make connections on there. There wasn't ever a heavy desire for me to want to sign up and actively go look for new friends to make at LJ.

I tend to stay away from "big" places because I feel so overwhelmed a lot of times. So my method is to find a few things that work for me and stick with it until it doesn't/I find something I like more.

Looking back as an adult, I think I stayed away from LJ because I got "Revenge of the Nerds" vibes. A lot of insecure people who didn't get to be the most popular and well liked person at school so they acted it out in their online spaces. And I shrivel away from social spaces that feel competitive.

AYRT, same here. It felt very connection-based and cliquey to me too, yes. And if I enjoyed networking I would be having a blast in the era of Linkedin but alas I am not, so, totally agreed.

Same here, actually. I like either "cozier" places, that are friendly and un-competitive (and that is NOT the LJ fandom experience, where everyone wanted to outshine the next fan) or places so big that only content matters.
