But we, personally, don't know a damn thing about famous people. Not really. All the information we receive about them comes from TV, movies, interviews, reports from cons if they're that type of celebrity. But does anyone ever actually know these people personally? No, of course not. So that's why it's all about "personas" and not about the actual person. RPFers could be getting things egregiously wrong about whomever they're writing about, and no one would ever know. And for celebrities to care about RPFers, they're first have to a. know that they exist, b. somehow come across their fic, c. actually feel compelled to read it, and then - the critical part - d. think that anyone actually cares what RPFers think.

If its not about the actual person, then what's the actual point of using their names, their faces? While most (if not all) don't know these people in real life and while true that you glean facets of their personality from their movies, interviews, etc., they aren't exactly 'acting' 24/7 when they're doing those. To claim that simply because you don't really 'know' them that it's perfectly fine to be able to do whatever you like with their likeness and/or whatever persona has been constructed in the author's head seems very fallacious to me. It essentially boils down to, "We don't really know who these real people are, so it's fine!"

Either way, it just really throws me off and it's something I find more then a bit creepy.

Yeah, but they're also not being 100% themselves, either. The ones who let all facets of their personality show, even the bad parts, get condemned for it - just ask Russell Crowe or Christian Bale. If RPFers knew every single ugly thing about the people they write about, I would think RPF would be far less popular.

And I bring up the fact of authors not knowing the celebs they write about to illustrate that fic authors approach writing about characters from a show and celebs the same way: they pour over the original material to better understand the "character", they look for subtext in "character" interactions, and they construct stories about what they think is going on. In other words, real people might as well be fictional characters, considering the extent of the relationship the author has to the them.

I used to be highly weirded out by RPF, too, and have the same misgivings - "But they're real people!" - and feel kinda sorry for the poor bastards who happen to come across fic about themselves... but then you begin to realize that people who become famous are no longer like regular people in that their frame of reference is nearly something that we can't conceive of. I mean, can imagine being judged literally every moment you're outside of your house? I can barely stand to be judged in real life, but the big ones seem to handle it with aplomb, which is a reason in part why they're famous - they can handle the judgment of strangers, and actually know how to turn it in their favor. If the ones who can't handle having explicitly fictional stories being made up over some throwaway lines they said in an interview, then they seriously have no business in the industry in the first place, because the real public does far, far worse over gaffes and behavior they don't approve of.

But despite all of your talking of how they're really writing "fictional" characters, they're not. They are writing about real people and whether or not they find it or even care doesn't matter to me: I think it's weird to force attributes and sexualities and even romances on real people in fiction. It's just too damn weird. It's... taking someone who's real and turning them into nothing but an object.
