LMAO and hmmm
Ultimate Tony drinks for well... everyone. But he seems to suffer from depression (according to his butler), and depression tends to make one self indulgent. You get the feeling that Tony knows this, but because of his tumour, he doesn't give a toss and... I cannot blame him.
Yeah, Ult Steve is hypermale in a way that 616 Steve isn't. I think because Ult Steve had a gimp leg, and was really frail and didn't even have art as a way to express himself like 616 Steve did.
Hee, again, I'm approaching tl;dr with this comment, but sorry, I'm an Ultimates Tony/Steve shipper, and if I can convert another unsuspecting person to the ranks well... my work here is done. Mwahahahahahahahahaha.

Yeah, I think the tumor gives Tony plenty of reason. :< Though I'm told sclerosis of the liver is a painful way to go, with his life he's more likely to be taken out by a random supervillain anyways. Might as well toast the devil as he passes.
Oh gods. And in a 1940s USA, that would have been practically de-manning in the eyes of a lot of people. :o And over-compensation would probably carry over...

Yeah. It doesn't help that Ults Steve doesn't seem to be sexually experienced (or even good, *ahem*). Whereas Ults Tony seems to be dissipated, dissolute and up for anything. Ults Tony would charm the knickers off a nun. But in my world, Ult Steve and Ult Tony are needy (each man in his own way), so they just... cleave to each other when it gets overwhelming. Then, to wit, they just don't talk about it.
What, slasher googles, me? The hell you say. In the Ultimates novel Against All Enemies there was so much sniping and pushing and fighting, I literally yelled, "Screw each other already!" Then had to leave the bus. Heh.
I don't know if I liked seeing Tony Stark being brought low in the drinking arc. Actually, I do remember feeling frightfully embarrassed and concerned.

The Steve you describe sounds very strangely like both of my grandfathers. o.O Which makes sense, because they were both in WWII. There's this sort of manly silence thing where they don't talk about emotions, but if one of them breaks down the other's there to have pointedly not witnessed anything and definitely didn't see any tears or hear anything that was said. Right? Of course, this means that they have to man it up and not accept help for anything until it's nearly too late. It's all very unhealthy and repressive and tends to result in anger management issues.

Quoted for truth. Yeah, that's Ultimates Steve. There's a panel in the comic when he sheds a tear because he's just been hit at all angles by his new existence, and Bucky has to hug him. D'awwwwww. I d'awwwed for Britain, then. It made Steve human to me somehow, and not that I'd be the one to change anyone (hell, NO! If you like a character warts and all, write 'em as is and hope that your writing is good enough to get people on side). But yes, that's Ult Steve. He's all a an with secrets in his own way.
Yes, the first two Ultimates volumes are fun stuff. Like, it's very much if everyone in Marvel 616 verse woke up and decided to be an arsehole and have No Thought or Consideration for anyone.

It's the edges of depression and Ult Tony's change of heart in the face of the tumour (he basically joined the Ultimates due to the fact that he wanted to give something back to the world before he died... or something) that gives him his humanity. If Ult Tony got rid of the tumour, and combated his depression, I'd like to see him struggle with alcoholism. Just because.
Ult Tony in AA? Ult Tony embracing sobriety? I would be in fits and giggles. Once day, I might attempt a fic around that. But not today, I have edits for justice.
