I studied classics at uni, and I've forgotten most of it (lol) but one thing I do remember was my impression that often the gods weren't above judgement so much as "beyond" it. They were forces that happened as much as beings to be venerated/feared/appeased - like fairies in UK folklore, they could be kind but often weren't, and the best thing to do if you couldn't hide from them was appease them via whatever route you could (honey, milk and bread for fairies, sacrifices, rituals and talismans for gods).

The tendency to connect men in power with relevant gods to emphasis how wonderful the man was, how he was destined to have power due to his link to the divine, may have been part of the reason why some gods were sanitised and made "good" by human standards. Some might have tried to justify why people worshipped at the altar of gods who had committed atrocities or been petty and vindictive (so, all of them, I guess!) because their view was that religion was to worship, not appease. Yet others would have been pissed that some randos in the next city-state over were telling a story that totally mischaracterised their uber-fav and would have loudly stated it wasn't canon.

But either way, the only way you can be wrong is to say you're the only one who's right with things like this - people have always had an opinion!

(If this makes no sense it's because I'm about to sleep, sorry, and I might have misinterpreted the secret)
