Huh. When I was in my tween Greek Mythology phase, my mother specifically told me that the Gods fucked up in a human way to explain why fucked up things happen to humans. Oh your husband is a serial cheater? Well, so is Zeus, he invented that. Your husband and mother hate each other? Well yeah, Demeter and Hades.

Not to mention Pandora, who is the excuse for literally all the bad things and a way to vilify women. I always saw the myths as people trying to justify their bad shit as them being made in the image of the gods and acting like them.

Actually, at least some of it had to do with claiming various local deities into the Greek pantheon once various city states started coalescing into a more united culture. Zeus became a serial cheater to explain various local deities.
