That sucks, and I feel you. I rarely ever was included in conversations with my family, and they never made any effort to keep the conversation going when I initiated. I figured I was just a boring person, because even as a kid I loved watching documentaries and I wanted to talk about them. My family is a "football/copaganda/gossip about the neighbors" family.

When I got back from college, my aunt let it slip that I made everyone feel stupid and that's why they hated talking to me. It took about ten years after that before I would try to initiate conversation about my latest fixation with anyone. I spend family gatherings in the corner surfing the net on my phone.

Holy crap, nonny. I'm sorry your family situation is awkward and that they would resent you for having interests and then try to shame you for how they feel. That's petty and heartless. I'm sorry you feel so alone around them =( I can relate to occupying myself with my phone by looking up stuff I'm into when I see family.

For my situation I have one sister who is super self obsessed, still tries to play by the win/lose logic of managing relationships. And the other isn't good at all in initiating and carrying convos and doesn't reassure or comfort. Either way, they're so checked out I sometimes resent that they don't even think about me outside of what I'm doing for them.
