Re: Have you ever walked out of a movie at the theaters?
(Anonymous) 2023-03-18 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)I'm a linguist and I was very interested in the premise of the movie, but in the end the linguistic part of it was so stupid it enraged me.
I was with friends, though, so I endured it and at one point the plot kept getting stupider and stupider so in the end I actually enjoyed myself.
The bonus was watching the movie dubbed in my native language (almost exclusively dubbed versions gets aired here) and it was either low quality or I was completely dumbed out at that point that I heard "Shall we make a blowjob" instead of "Let's have a baby" like it was intended to be. (For context: baby = bambino; blowjob = pompino it's quite similar)
I LAUGHED SO HARD DURING ONE OF THE MOST DRAMATIC SCENES OF THIS MOVIE. I laughed silently not to disturb other people and almost chocked myself. I don't regret a thing.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)Maybe there was something else along the lines of "knowing the fate of humanity and not doing anything about it"? I don't remember some plot elements. I remember there was a Chinese general and maybe a future war going on?

(Anonymous) 2023-03-19 12:05 am (UTC)(link)I didn't say AS A LINGUIST, I said [I'm a linguist and I was very interested in the premise of the movie]. A premise that emphasized the importance of the linguistic aspects of the communication between then human and the alien species.
Now, I saw this movies in 2016 and I don't recall the details, but I vividly remember that the linguist first tried to approach the alien, who communicated through what seemed like ideograms, with a very complex language like modern English. Like... WHAT???? English is your first choice there???
Not only the language choice itself, how she tried to communicate was somehow "misguided" in someway. I don't recall how, but I remember getting very frustrated by her methods (it's possible that's not the case. I have a very bad memory, so don't quote me on that.).
The linguistic part of the movie was seriously lacking and I was watching the movie because I was interested in that so I got very upset. It probably was a good sci-fi flick (maybe? IDK and IDC) but I was advertised something different and it completely ruined any potential enjoyment I could've had from the movie.
BTW I actually liked the time traveling twist because it's one of my favorite tropes.
I hated the twist about the child's fate because FUCK THAT, but the time traveling part and that the knowledge transmitted thorough language could have super human powers itself was quite fascinating to me. Which is salt added to injury because this movie completely dumbed down a story that had some serious potential.
