NAYRT - Thank you for explaining this! I was oblivious to the whole cultural aspect of it, but it makes so much sense in that context and I can totally see the point of it. I'm the only child of a single parent, so I've never had an 'everyone comes together when dinner is ready' experience of eating, but I've sometimes longed for that kind of ritual social experience-- so I can totally see how if one grew up with that and then didn't have it anymore, they might really miss it.

The version where someone eats a LOT of food for the entertainment of the audience was the version I knew about, and I still find that really squicky, but it's good to know that's not actually the whole picture.
