I just placed olive oil in my ears according to doctor advice, and now I'm just hoping that doctor was not a quack.

I've seen olive oil based drops/spray recommended for certain types of ear wax build up, if that helps.

It can be beneficial, but it depends on your ears' condition. If you need it to just soften your earwax then you'll probably be Ok.

I've done it a few times in the past, but for me it was a flop :/
My sister though does it regularly with no problem.

It's a good treatment for softening wax in your ears, although it depends on what needs to be treated. In any case it's one of many ways to treat ailments in your ears.

When I was a kid, my dad would put a couple drops of warm oil in our ears if we had an earache; the heat felt really good.

It won't *hurt* your ears, just leave them kinda slippery, heh. I recommend cotton balls if you're going to bed, or you'll have oily spots on your pillow.

Resident "snake oil anon" here and I would never do that to my ears.

As you can see, different cultures have different, well, remedies.

LOL. It's not about "different cultures", it's about medical science vs. New Age quackery. The olive oil treatment doesn't promise some magical woo woo cure like essential oil. It's specifically meant to soften dry ear wax in order to aid the process where the wax sloughs out of the ear canal naturally. This is recommended by actual medical doctors with actual medical credentials, not randos on the internet with a paranoia about modern medicine.

I'm here for that first line. That said, I've seen RNs and even a couple MDs recommend borderline fraudulent treatments, so....

Unfortunately, people can answer and perform on tests what they know they need to, and then NOT do that in their professional lives. Also, it just came out recently that Florida has been graduating nurses with no actual qualifications....
