That poor dog *cries* I guess this explains in part the resurgence in canine mutilation. I’d love to slice off the ears of everyone involved in mutilating this and every other poor dog.

If it helps, it was a rescue dog that Patrick wanted so he could talk about that very issue. Just pretend in the future they worked out how to breed ears like that naturally.

... I don't think bunches of people watched Picard and thought oh yeah, gonna cut off my dog's ears, if that's what you mean? It's an awful, awful practice that's been going on for decades before the show.

The practice had been dwindling for years until around 2016/17. Now lots of vets are willing to do it again and local laws banning the practice have been repealed. That definitely isn’t just because of this show but showcasing a cropped dog normalizes the appearance.

Makes me glad that my family was able to donate some money to an animal welfare charity this year. I hope they will be able to fund some veterinarians to help undo the surgical damage done to these poor defenseless creatures.

Depends where you live. It's illegal in my country to dock a dog's ears or tail, or to declaw cats. As it should be.

ffs it's a rescue dog who is being given a new life with the series. no one involved in the show went 'this is awesome we should advertise it!' in fact patrick stewart has spoken publicly against docking and that was one of the reasons he chose this rescue dog to save.
