I love the droid! I understand why they were introduced as the cannon fodder in the prequels (can't have Jedi cutting down thousands of sentient and independent beings) but did they have to make them so cute?

One of the Star Wars channels I watch had a really sad video about the whole backstory of these droids, why they talk the way they do, and there whole thing. It is actually really sad and makes them really interesting. Not sure how much is Legends and how much is canon.

And, also - fucking yes. I *loathe* when characters do stupid crap, or are just stupid, and that's basically the only reason anything every works out for their opposition. The opposite sucks, too; when a character is dumbed down for a 'special guest' to be framed as awesome (happened on Show SO MANY TIMES).

I don't think the villains are necessarily stupid now (and I don't mind a stupid villain, stupid but chaotic villains are very fun)...but it's clear no thought has been put into a lot of plans, and that annoys me.

Villain: (After being defeated by the MC for the power of love/friendship/being stronger/etc) I should've killed you when I had the chance to!

Wholeheartedly agreed. As a villain fan, this is why I have not been remotely interested in going to a movie for literally years. Movies that are set up like this give all the characters I find relatable such massive brain damage and lack of depth that I have no reason to watch. It's like they're not allowed to be funny or sexy or passionate or even make taboo but potentially valid points anymore.

So I'm over here on the periphery of fandom re-reading Tamburlaine the Great and some (unrelated but high-flying) fanfics. But from what I've seen, it's a desert, if you're looking for worthwhile villains in recently made anything, these days.

I’ve been on the other side, trying to sell shoes that were actually durable (and would get me a big commission), but only selling cheap shoes with no durability because our customers were too poor for anything else. That shop shut down because the company owner decided to focus on richer communities where shoes could sell for $200 a pair.

TBH people who like it seem pretty chill at this point. There was a certain amount of "Orville is the TRUE Trek" when it was first coming out, but now most of the Orwell fans seem pretty comfortable just doing their thing and letting everyone else do their thing. Probably because time has passed, also maybe because some of the more recent new!Trek stuff has been more well-liked? IDK. Just feels like everything has calmed down a lot.

Personally I'll never watch The Orville but that's just because of my intense aversion to Seth MacFarlane.

The kindergarten I went to had a picture book where all the Spanish characters were drawn with the features of modern-day Latin Americans. This included Columbus, who I guess the author thought was Spanish because he had Spanish funding. (It was one of those “everyone except Columbus thought the Earth was flat” books, too.)

As I see it, if you’re making a claim about what your soul is, I can’t see your soul, and I don’t know anything about it. If you’re making a claim about the universe, I can actually look at the world around me. So otherkin are less embarrassing than, say, people who think gay sex causes earthquakes.

Did anyone else see the videos from yesterday? I keep seeing media articles and SM comments about how happy he was celebrating and it…didn’t look the same to me. He looked like someone who was completely unaware of what was happening and was simply following cues. It was heartbreaking for me as a fan but my heart especially hurt for his family. He doesn’t seem like he’s even in there anymore, like he’s already been lost to his disease. It kinda sucked today seeing all the fan support about how he’s still the same when I don’t think he is at all. And his wife’s video seemed to confirm that (which was recorded and posted first I believe but I didn’t see it until after the cake video). I also think his family thinks it was probably his last birthday and that’s just broke my heart for them.
