(Anonymous) 2023-03-20 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)It's okay. We don't have respectable, we can just have fun in our sandpit and welcome all the other weirdos in to join us.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-21 02:46 am (UTC)(link)Sincere question here, but how would people view fandom as subversive? I.e. people outside of fandom.
Like okay, it's a space where people who often are marginalized in some shape or form tend to build space for themselves, but is that it? Because there's plenty of IRL groups that are subversive but not considered weird. So I'm just kind of curious about your statement. I say this as someone who joined fandom as a kid because I didn't see people like myself in the media I consumed and made it myself/found others who did. I never really found it subversive, personally. I think the only way I would see it that way is if it lead me or others to create originalefia featuring characters based on ourselves, and then we kind of enter the question of art being political, even if that's not what you're trying to do. Again, asking this question sincerely, not trolling or sarcasm/,trying to pick a fight. Just want to see and maybe come to understand a different perspective. Thanks!

(Anonymous) 2023-03-21 06:40 am (UTC)(link)Like, you asked a valid question, and I'm not trying to be snarky, but honestly fandom is so thoroughly subversive from top to bottom that not recognizing it as such kind of feels like missing the forest for the trees.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-21 10:39 am (UTC)(link)No snark taken. Thanks for your answer. I figured that might have been what you meant. I suppose it was more of a me not recognizing it as subversive because I am there and don't consider myself a subversive actor -- not recognizing that you're part of the soup while you're in the pot. Basically what you're saying lol. I also tend to associate subversion with political action and art more than this space. But thank you for the clarification!

(Anonymous) 2023-03-21 04:14 am (UTC)(link)What's your point? You can tell yourself you're more interesting because your Wario/Sauron cuckolding fic is subversive (what you're subverting I have no idea) but that doesn't change the fact that most people outside fandom will think it's weird (as will a lot inside fandom). And, more to my point, picking on the fiction otherkin because you think they're the reason other people think you're weird is both jerky and delusional.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-21 10:20 am (UTC)(link)Ironically enough, anxiety-driven busybodies who try to control other people are the ones I try to have the least to do with, in fandom. And really, the only group I tend to think poorly of.
