I agree that this is stupid, but "it's insulting to some people's religion" is really not an argument against it as far as I'm concerned. Being gay is "insulting to some people's religion". Being a woman who has opinions and exists independently of a man is "insulting to some people's religion". Nobody should base their actions on what some religion finds insulting unless they're a part of that religion.

So much this. When a religion takes issue with the existence of non-believers doing stuff that is personally meaningful to them, it's being insulting to the existence of a world beyond the narrow confines of that one religion. When it further tries to argue that those other people are the ones that need to change, that's all deeply disrespectful.
