As far as I've seen, otherkin is basically just roleplay, but they want to call it something that's more ~special~, so they steal legitimacy from actual beliefs and mental illnesses, without having either.

Nah. It deserves exactly as much or as little respect as any other belief does. And the person connected to it deserves whatever amount of respect they're offering others.

But unless you feel well-represented by the loudest, most quarrelsome people in your various identity markers, I'd suggest you think carefully before deciding "otherkin are like ..." based on ones that swerve way out of their lane to interact with people who were making no effort to interact with them.

AYRT I've thought plenty, because former loved ones have used this kind of thinking to hurt me in the past. I know what I'm looking at. Are there people who are harmless in it? Sure. There's harmless people caught up in any group mentality. It's the "group mentality" part of it, though, that people involved (in otherkin, in multiples, in shifting, in religion, in spirituality, in magic, anything along the altered-reality lines--and I say that as a self-labelled magic-user, lmao) need to keep in mind at all times.

That being said, I do disagree with OP's premise that it affects fandom's reputation as a whole. Normies are not even aware this shit is happening, I promise, and as others have said, bullies gonna bully no matter what.
