(Anonymous) 2023-03-22 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)1) it was, I feel, genuine fear and not hatred (using the disguise of fear to "justify" the subjugation of other human beings) that motivated his racism. I understand that he was pretty isolated (maybe I'm wrong, I'm actually not an expert) and thus he had all this fears of the unknown, probably cultivated by what he heard from people around him as reflected in his novels. It doesn't exonarate him, but it's something.
2) From what I've read (and other posters have pointed out), once he did get his head out of his behind, he was ashamed of his former beliefs and stop being a racist.
