When you’re trying to describe something that can’t be comprehended by humans, a valid approach is to strain your vocabulary, reaching for all sorts of words that don’t truly describe the subject, but at least come closer than the common words would.

Yeah he was a fine writer stylistically if what you want is pulp-y weird occult fantasy. And that is something a lot of people do want! Because it's a lot of fun.

And, very very racist, yes. Although I think some people go a little too far in treating the racism as like, a secret key to all of his fiction. I don't think that's a correct view.

And Lovecraft himself repented of the worst of his racism too, before his untimely death.

Is there a source for him repenting? I never heard of it.

NAYRT and I don't have a source off the top of my head but I've read the same thing, and also that he generally just mellowed about a lot of things.

Also he died quite young - he was 47 when he passed away - and he was fairly isolated socially up until, really, his late 20s or early 30s. So to some extent it makes sense to me that he would mellow considerably.

I agree. The issue with his writing is the racism. I really like the style of writing and the whole genre his writing spawned. I'm always excited when I hear about a new, decent Lovecraftian book that isn't racist or sexist.

Lovecraft was a deeply weird guy and his racism was also absolutely bewildering.
But he could write. And also I enjoy cosmic horror very much

I think I have more sympathy for Lovecraft, in spite of his racism for two reasons:

1) it was, I feel, genuine fear and not hatred (using the disguise of fear to "justify" the subjugation of other human beings) that motivated his racism. I understand that he was pretty isolated (maybe I'm wrong, I'm actually not an expert) and thus he had all this fears of the unknown, probably cultivated by what he heard from people around him as reflected in his novels. It doesn't exonarate him, but it's something.

2) From what I've read (and other posters have pointed out), once he did get his head out of his behind, he was ashamed of his former beliefs and stop being a racist.
