I think many of y'all are missing the point. These items were STOLEN. Should we forgive the person who invaded someone's house and stole all their jewelry and refuses to give it back because later the house burned down (maybe on account of what the thief did while there) and therefore the owner isn't a good custodian of the jewels?

No. Changing those jewels to Benin Bronzes doesn't suddenly change the fact that it was stolen and needs to be returned.

History belongs to all of humanity. If humanity's history is going to be destroyed, then I'll back anyone who saves it. Go blow up a Buddha in Afghanistan if you believe anything different.

Many places outside of Afghanistan are not Afghanistan

Oh hey, dude who stole the stuff before the fire (that you may or may not have caused). We really like the stuff you stole, you can totally keep it since we like it. The people you stole it from, who made it and for whom it has great sentimental value, can go fuck themselves.

Also, does that mean you think we should be going into places that you personally deem unstable and steal all the things from their museums for "safe keeping"? If not, then why is it okay just because it happened a while ago?
