It's a really good book - as far as the romance goes, there are more non-straight people than the two in the romance (!) and one has a best friend who is also a lesbian but they aren't, and never have been, attracted to each other (!!) which was weirdly really nice to read about.

Moving away from that, it's about the political, social and cultural tensions between a formerly powerful country and the empire that overtook it witb neither power having particularly clean hands; the romantic pairing is cultural-enemies-to-lovers with both having a strong tie to their duties. There's a very misogynistic religious nut as an overarching villain, but his hate is not especially sexualised (which is also refreshing!). Also there's magic, bonus.

I really would recommend it.
