Disappointment

(Anonymous) 2023-03-25 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
One of my favorite YouTubers just had a baby and now it's all super condescending "now I realize the true meaning of life and how meaningless everything was before" and "I feel so bad/have so much pity for people without kids" bullshit and I'm so fucking disappointed. Part of me wants to leave an angry comment but I also don't want to start drama because as far as I can see, the rest of the fans are agreeing with the "everyone without kids is sad and pathetic" crap and just...IDK. I'm so annoyed right now.

What have you guys been disappointed by recently?

I don't think there's anything to lose by making a quick comment about how you feel. Maybe people will apologize. And if you get dogpiled instead, then you're better off leaving that place. But yeah, it would be disappointing if that happened with someone you used to like.

I ended up making a (what I'm hoping was) polite comment along the lines of "I'm happy you're enjoying parenthood, but it's a personal choice that isn't for everyone" and hoping I don't get dogpiled. If I do then I'll know the channel definitely isn't for me anymore.

A YouTuber who, to be fair, I don't watch often because his personality grates me, but usually agree with on politics and social issues, saying the changes to Roald Dahl's books were stupid and unnecessary.

...but they were stupid and unnecessary.

They really were.

I think we've been doing (and are continuing to do) serious harm to children by sheltering them from all discomfort. I read Huckleberry Finn when I was quite young and I remember how startled and off-put I was by the language-- I went to my mother and was like wtf?? Why does he keep saying that word?? I was genuinely really upset about it. But thankfully my mother sat me down and we had a really good age-appropriate chat about racism and how things were versus how things are (and what had/hadn't changed since then), so I came out of the experience a little more well-rounded.

Idk, discomfort isn't a bad thing. It can help us learn. Is calling Augustus Gloop "enormously fat" cruel language? Absolutely. But being uncomfortable with that is good, and can open up dialogues.

There is a ytuber whom I broadly agree with about fandom, and do align with politically, but I just hate because he is so fucking smug about it all the time. He is antifandom's biggest recruiter just due to how smug he is.

Out of curiosity, which YouTuber is this?

I don't blame you one bit for being disappointed. If people are happy to have kids that's fine but don't dump all over those of use who have made the decision not to.

maybe this is dumb but earlier today I was out doing some shopping, etc. in a fairly busy neighborhood w/ lots of people and there was a guy with a mic and speakers singing "Happy" by Pharrell and doing a great job of it and I enjoyed it so much I started singing with him and everybody, including him, ignored me completely.

That sucks, nonny. There's an artist I follow because their art is awesome, but they had a baby a few months ago and now all their posts are about the baby. I know it's their account and they can post what they want, but I really don't care about the baby updates and I'm hoping they start posting art again soon.

People who say that shit are insufferable, they didn't learn a goddamn thing from having kids except that they can weaponize them against the childless/childfree. It never figures in their heads that some of us folk don't want kids and are doing the world a favor by not having any (you really want kids raised by someone who doesn't want them? really?). Not to mention it's tone deaf af to the folk who actually want kids but can't for various reasons. Like, if kids made their life meaningful, great. But suggesting life is meaningless for everyone else is what makes me pity them instead.

Anyway.

Speaking of Youtube, I sometimes watch psych type and similar channels and was disappointed to find a rather popular one yesterday use a comm post to go on some weird persecution rant about being spiritual while shaming atheists for not being spiritual in hypothetical situations. Even though it got deleted within ten minutes, I made Youtube stop recommending the channel to me. I personally don't care who follows what religion or who doesn't, but I don't need weird ass surprises like that from channels that are supposed to be uplifting.

Ugh. Religion is like having kids...if you're interested in it, good for you, but don't try to convince everyone else they need to be, too.

I don't know why people can't just mind their own business in general and just leave other people alone.

DA

As someone who doesn't have children and is either atheist or agnostic, thank you.

Fucking this. Religion is like a dick; it's great you have one, but don't take it out in public, and don't try to shove it down anybody's throat, especially KIDS.

And kids, frankly...i love my daughter to death, but other people's kids are like other people's big, hairy, slobbery dogs, or tiny, jumpy, bitey, yappy dogs; DNfuckingW. And keep them the fuck off me.

Re: Disappointment

(Anonymous) 2023-03-25 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Someone once said to me that they'd "started caring about climate change" since they had kids. I had to bite my tongue and not say that it's funny how some people are actually able to care about things that might not directly affect them or their genetic material. (They had also had step-kids for years before saying that :/)
It's great that some people find having kids gives them a new perspective on life, but it is very weird and small-minded to think that it is the only way to live or that the experience would be the same for everyone. I think that idea says more about them personally than it does about the world.

I find people like you more insufferable TBH. We get it, you're a better person than everyone else because you have the innate ability to care about things that aren't going to directly affect you or your loved ones. Are you like, doing anything about it besides sitting behind a computer screen feeling that deep caring feeling and bragging about just how much you caaaaaaaare?

sa - I didn't say I care, I said some people do :)

Re: Disappointment

(Anonymous) 2023-03-25 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
sa again - Also, that's fair, I take your point. It would have been an obnoxious thing to say and that's why I didn't say it.

Man, this reply is weirdly judgy over somebody having a thought.

(They had also had step-kids for years before saying that :/)

I just snorted and then said, "Oh noooooo" out loud. Kind of a dick move to say stuff matters more now because they have biological kids.

There's brand of watercolour paints I really wanted to try out but they aren't sold in my country anywhere. Now I finally found a site that has them and would ship to my country without me having to sell a kidney and they actually have a sale for that exact brand of paints but the one colour I was interested in the most is out of stock.

Re: Disappointment

(Anonymous) 2023-03-25 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, isn't that always the way? I hope they get it back in stock soon.
