Her (really mild, and due to his own silly vanity) rejection of him didn't provoke him to assault her, he was kind to her in person (Anne says he treated her gently and called her sweetheart when they went to bed together but didn't have sex) and talked shit about her looks to other men. Dude noped out of a political marriage because the woman in question didn't swoon over him, LOL.
