I'm pretty sure it's a known phenomenon that (for writers who are publishing frequently) first books are often higher in quality than the follow ups. And that's purely because the authors got to edit the first one to death, often over years, before they got it published - but then are pressured to conceptualise, write, edit and publish their next books in a much shorter timeframe.
