You're not wrong, OP, I've definitely been seeing this too. I think it's because when you have a series that needs to come out on an exact deadline, authors have less time to really let it sit in the oven. I blame publishing companies for this, not exactly authors, because I know how long it can take for something you're writing to really meet your expectations.

I think the current market pressures have distorted "a reasonable schedule" into something really unsustainable. Unless you're literally Seanan McGuire, who writes day and night like she's running out of time, 2 to 5 years between books is much more reasonable than a book or two a year.

Being obligated to do something too fast will generally make it worse. This is true of nearly any task, not just writing.

Of course there's a limit; I know I don't need to let my fanfics sit on the backburner for months to years on end between chapters to make them come out properly. But capitalism rewards speed way more than quality.

hmm, i do think there are authors who are writing in a way that I personally find meh or worse but that clearly allows them a good deal of output, because it simply doesn't take as much thought lol. but I think writers who write well but aren't considered like the writing equivalent of tentpoles still have fairly good output. it's just the tentpoles that for some reason get jammed up.

Brit here with a friendship group that is half Scots and half West Country. The Scots amongst us habitually refer to travelling to Scotland as going 'north of the wall'. (Us from the West Country refer to our home counties as The Shire.)

Yeah, they suck. I always disable them when I can but it sucks that they keep popping up every 30 days.

It's especially stupid because like.... the short length is not the main attraction of Tiktok anyway! The magic dust of Tiktok is the algorithm and the For You feed, not the length of the videos or the fact that they're vertical.
