The greatest debate in all of smut writing: Come or Cum?

Come all the way. Cum looks childish to me and also just looks out of place in the fandoms I'm usually reading porn for.

Come, unless you want people to think you write for Nifty.

depends on how dirty the tone is aiming for

I use one of each for my two accounts on AO3 in an attempt to disguise my writing from each other.

Come. When I see cum in a fic my first assumption is that it's written by a new writer who's not great at spelling, and if they aren't, that they have a kink for a kind of dirty talk that's a turn off for me.

Come for verb, cum for noun.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-26 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the right way of doing it. Just looks weird if you use "come" as a noun.

Re: Based on the above thread

Cum just looks stupid to me.

Re: Based on the above thread

(Anonymous) 2023-03-26 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on tone. Cum can work okay if it's going for a raunchy porn tone instead of a more romancey or mainstream-fictiony one. I still prefer it as a noun and not a verb.

Come, for god's sake, come. "Cum" feels incredibly juvenile to me, and also reminds me viscerally of the extremely female-objectifying, male-gazey pornography* I snuck nauseated, morbidly curious looks at as a teenager in the early 00's.

My feelings on the word "cum" can be summed up by the following two quotes:

"In my mind, it is always 'coming,' 'come,' or 'came,' respectively, because I find the shorthand to be one of the worst slang terms available in the English language. It’s so…truncated. It’s squat. 'Cum' is for the men trying to get me to cyber with them on ICQ; it’s the paperbacks I found in the bookcase of a rental apartment my family once lived in. 'Cum' is the deliberately misspelled phrase that, to me, fails to denote any kind of sexually satisfying sleaze and instead only conjures up grease, a shortcut to pleasure, and there are no shortcuts to pleasure, or at least there shouldn’t be."
-- Haley Mlotek, The Hairpin

"'Cum' is not a word. We don’t have three-letter alternate spellings for other four-letter words that have double meanings. You wouldn’t write 'I know this guy who sucks and he’s a mean dick, but he’s so fucking hot, I want to suk his dik.'"
--Dan Savage, Savage Love

*I'm not shaming anyone for the porn they like, it's fine, it's whatever--but I'm also not going to apologize for being violently turned off by porn that portrays women as a bunch of bouncy, pouty holes to be fucked. Men are free to like it and I'm free to say it makes me want to weld my legs shut.

Come. Unless the person using the word is immature or gross.

Where are all the fics/fandoms where people are using anything but "cum"????

For a long time I was very much on the "'come' because 'cum' is immature and technically not a real word" train but through the years I began to only ever see "cum" in fics so I was like, "guess I'm an old fart who needs to adapt to the new norms".

So now I write "cum" and if it means I get less engagement, etc then...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm tired of knowing what's right and what's wrong. Maybe I'll just keep choosing wrong forever.

Re: Based on the above thread

I think there's three main factors at play here:

1. It's fairly fandom specific.
2. How new/old the fandom is. I'm pretty sure the word has made a resurgence in recent years, so it's less likely to crop up in older fandoms than current ones, and it's more likely to crop up in new fics than older ones.
3. Age of fic writers. There seems to be more young fans who lack the distaste for it that the majority of older fans have.

Re: Based on the above thread

Cum for parody, come for serious fic. I don't hate the word "cum" but it does come off (haha) as silly.

Re: Based on the above thread

(Anonymous) 2023-03-28 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Come, one hundred percent. 'Cum' is the least sexy thing I have ever seen and every time someone uses it, I cringe. ESPECIALLY as a verb. Like, I don't *like* seeing it as a noun, but a verb? Gross, horrid.
