Yeah, they suck. I always disable them when I can but it sucks that they keep popping up every 30 days.

It's especially stupid because like.... the short length is not the main attraction of Tiktok anyway! The magic dust of Tiktok is the algorithm and the For You feed, not the length of the videos or the fact that they're vertical.

The reason why YT shorts astounds me is because I notice the overwhelming majority of people that use YT prefer longer videos. That's why people go to YT for longer videos about a certain topic and go to TikTok for bite-sized things.

I don't know where I'd be without my list of favorite several-hour long video essays on YT about random fandom nonsense.

Oh yeah I hate that YT has shorts now. If I wanted TikTok, I'd go on TikTok. I guess they're trying to keep innovating to stay with the times, so I feel like I don't have a right to be annoyed by it (maybe they did studies? idk... but the feedback I'm hearing some creators mention in their vids is that their viewers want LONGER vids, not shorter ones). I wish things could just not try to copy other things. Be your own thing!

From what I've heard from some creators, Shorts are helping them get new subscribers that will more reliably watch their longer videos. (And I understand that YouTubers are getting better compensation for their short vids compared to TikTok, but that's a whole different ballgame right there.)

[personal profile] lumy12 2023-03-26 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I guess it's not a fad that's going to just go away then. Thanks for sharing! I'm still a little salty at YT for getting rid of the "sort by oldest" feature. Sometimes I like to work my way through a channel that's new to me in chronological order. YT probably only wants people watching the most recent stuff -- I get the feeling from some creators that watching a vid the day it goes up is the best way to help them out.

I'm definitely one of those people. There are people's whose shorts I've watched then gone on to watch longer form vids. Or at least subscribe to them. At times it definitely introduces me to new creators I wouldn't check out.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-26 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I dislike this creators especially. Because they are decent, so I do look into their shorts but then you get the magic of algorithm and oops it's been at least 15 minutes instead of 1 and YouTube is showing you some sexist joker and creepy porno spam

1. Install Redirector.
2. Enact a rule that looks like this. (This extension doesn't seem to have an easy copy-and-paste import/export function, soz)
3. Enjoy normal-looking youtube videos that happen to be less than like three minutes.

... and it's probably been said but the point of shorts is to be "tiktok but google gets the profit", so. The similarity is intentional.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-27 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Installed. How do I enact that rule? I literally don't know what buttons to push to find the option.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-27 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
SA - Never mind, figured it out. On firefox you go to add-ons->redirect->preferences-> edit redirects -> create redirect.

(We're doing this in Firefox; it might work slightly differently in another browser but should at least be reasonably analogous.)

In your extensions menu (the one in the toolbar that looks like a puzzle piece, not the entire options page), click Redirector, then "Edit Redirects". Then click the "Create New Redirect" button, and that'll open up a menu that looks basically exactly like the one we screenshot above. Type and select all the things as in the screenshot (click "show advanced options" to show some of them).

I eliminates shorts with ublock origin and this rule: https://letsblock.it/filters/youtube-shorts
It's the simpler option, I believe.

This looks like it hides shorts entirely. Some people would definitely prefer that; the Redirector solution is intended for people who still want to watch the videos but in a normal non-shorts format.

I both hate and love youtube shorts. I hate how it sucks me into watching a lot of trash for an hour. But I have found a few new people to subscribe to via watching their shorts, so...

(Anonymous) 2023-03-26 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's really interesting actually that short youtube videos (<3min) used to be the most popular, but then that gradually changed to long (>10min) videos. But then tiktok changed things - so youtube is now trying to push both longform videos and tiktok esque shorts (and pushing creators to make both).

Well, interesting and very stupid.

Why doesn't youtube allow for market differentiation? And why is there no space for creators to become popular because of their content, not the length or format of their videos? It's the definition of a boring dystopia.

I will click on a short occasionally at 2AM at work, when i'm bored, and it might be fun or interesting or whatever, but then....you scroll and you start getting weird or stupid stuff and THEN, I've noticed...it keeps showing the same ones. OVER AND OVER. Like there's a list and the initial one I clicked on was an outlier, and it just goes back to the list and STARTS ALL OVER, every time.

So - do not like.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-27 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Stanzi and Adrian Bliss are the only "live action" shorts I like. Beyond that, animations are okay - animating takes forever so I kind of like having short form animation videos. It's a nice way of finding new animators while they work on longer form stuff.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-27 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I have no opinion on YouTube shorts but I like Uyen Ninh!

(Anonymous) 2023-03-27 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Stanzi is hilarious and basically the reason I started using my YouTube app. I don't know the other two, but a fair amount of the people I watch have decent to funny shorts. I don't use TikTok, so it's good enough for me/I'm not familiar enough with TikTok to know the general... norms? I guess?

(Anonymous) 2023-03-27 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
TBH I originally hated them. I like some of them from time to time now. I like makeup, nail, cake/cookie decoration shorts. I also like some comedy skits/shorts too.

But I can do without them.
