I feel that. But honestly... you just have to force yourself to stop. If you're on the computer, log out of social media websites and delete the history if you can. If you're on the phone... I dunno, log out of apps or turn off the app notifications (I don't do shit on my phone so maybe someone else knows how that works). If you absolutely MUST keep up with social media, do it once a week and log out immediately. Similar with news... I know! So much shit going on, and who the hell wants to get blindsided by shit! But if once a week is too much, try twice a week and see how that feels. And keep in mind that while bad shit is happening, so is a lot of good shit and mundane shit. It's just that bad shit gets attention because human brains are wired to seek out threats.

For news, try sites like NPR or Reuters. I'm told these aren't so damn slanted.

DA

I find Media Bias Fact Check to be a useful tool for screening news outlets for bias and accuracy.

Yeah, limit yourself to 2-3 trusted news outlets and then don't read anything news related that isn't on those sites. I was doom scrolling through the first lockdown (like everyone) and what got me out of it was limiting myself to reading/watching only specific news outlets.

Something that is so important is to create natural boundaries. Social media websites deliberately try to keep you on them.

Sites like tumblr have an option you can enable to make it so you have to click through pages rather than infinitely scrolling. When you use your phone, sit in a weird place or uncomfortable position that you can only maintain for so long. Set alarms. Restrict scrolling to breakfast or bathroom time.

Whatever boundaries you can set, the better. Social media preys upon the intermittent reward and tiny dopamine bursts. The more you can get dopamine from other things and prevent yourself from getting trapped in an endless loop, the better.
