God the fuckers in power REALLY want a super sanitized future.
How did we get to such a shit timeline?

(Anonymous) 2023-03-30 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Christ, did I write this secret in my sleep? Are you me, OP?

We live in the worst timeline

The recent mess with the internet archive doesn't effect the actual archive or do anything to damage libraries as they are. The internet archive had a project (or the owner did?) where copyright for a shit ton of stuff was infringed. That's it. They were essentially pirating books very publicly and loudly and got taken to court for it. The owner tried to spin it as "they're attacking libraries!" but it was just pirated books LMAO not a library.

It was a controlled digital lending system they organized in the wake of all the libraries that shut down during the pandemic, and yes, if the case goes through it sets a precedent to go after all the other regular libraries that do the exact same thing. It's very transparent and it's not even the first time publishers attempt to do this in history.

But I guess if you're not throwing money at Amazon it must be illegal, eh anon.

I thought that OP was referring to how there are libraries currently getting censored or debating to start censoring libraries:
from - https://www.jurist.org/news/2023/03/us-library-group-censorship-demands-in-public-libraries-schools-increased-in-2022/

"The ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom compiled data on the number of attempts to restrict access to certain library books. 2022 saw the highest number of demands to censor library books and materials since the organization started compiling censorship data more than 20 years ago: more than 1,200 censorships requests were made last year. They also reported a 38 percent increase in the number of titles requested for censorship, with the majority of these requests occurring in schools compared to public libraries. The ALA notes their data likely under-reports the total number of censorship attempts.

Books targeted for censorship in past years included those depicting LGBTQ+ characters, minority characters, and anti-police messages. ALA’s President Lessa Kanani’opua Pelayo-Lozada said, “Many library workers face threats to their employment, their personal safety, and in some cases, threats of prosecution for providing books to youth they and their parents want to read.”

This report comes less than a month after members of the US House introduced H.R.5, known as the Parents Bill of Rights Act, which would require public schools to post books and topics included in the curriculum for parents to view. While proponents argue parents have the right to know what their children learn, critics of the bill fear this will only encourage further censorship in libraries. Political and legal fights over censorship continue at the state level as well: last month, librarians in Missouri sued the state due to its ban on “sexually explicit materials” in schools."

They don't want a sanitized future; they want an ignorant future, because ignorant people are much easier to manipulate and control.

BTW, the Republicans in the Missouri State House of Representatives voted to defund all libraries in the entire state.

Missouri (where I live) just defunded ALL PUBLIC LIBRARIES. Because the GQP in charge are pissed that some librarians are challenging the book bans they are pushing.

Defunding the libraries is against the state Constitution. I have no fucking idea what's going to happen, but i am PISSED.

Also - MoLeg GQP is sitting on over 6 BILLION in surplus funds they refuse to use.

Two hundred years in the future, people will be asking "why don't we have more works from the 20th and 21st centuries? they could have preserved it all so easily". Just like history/lit nerds now lament all the stuff that was printed on pulp paper and not saved the way the classics were. Were those books any good? probably not but we'll never know.

You're really optimistic, nonny!

Honestly, I think were it not for the fact that libraries are an ancient invention dating back to antiquity, we would never be able to get them built. If we were to propose this invention today, people would throw hissies about how it's TEH SOCIALIZM!111111! and be all, "I don't want to pay so somebody can read tawdry romances for free!" and on and on.

Libraries are magic and are one of society's best inventions. Fight like hell to keep them around.
