I mean... not surprising? If it's good smut, that's where a fair amount of the character work is going to be.

+1 Especially if it's ship-focused, a lot of the emotional intensity is going to be in the smut, and probably a fair amount of character/relationship development too. It's often the climax of the story in more ways than one.

Yeah, like, I'm a person who skims smut 90% of the time, but if it's a *well-written* fic, of course it seems off if you take out most of the most important scenes?

There are of course plenty of stories where you can take out the sex scenes and lose nothing, but it's not a *coincidence* that it's often the most highly-regarded ones where this doesn't work.
