As someone who reads a decent amount of fanfic and generally prefers fic with sex scenes because I like reading long romantic fic but usually skip through a lot of the sex scenes because they don't do anything for me - OH MY GOD, you are doing it wrong. The point of a romantic story is - a lot of the time - the build up to the sex. If you just excise the sex scenes, it's like cutting out the final action scene of a movie - or key character scenes early in the movie, if they have sex through out.

To put it another way, if someone writes an entire erotic novella where you can just cut out the sex scenes and nothing else changes, then they write bad sex scenes.

Yeah, this!

I'm kind of bored by battle scenes sometimes but if you cut them all out of, say, Lord of the Rings, it wouldn't be quite the same story, would it?
