I dunno. The ancient hedgehogs are Egypt-themed, and I can’t find anything online about hedgehogs in Egypt.

Seriously, man? Come on:

It is like you are not even trying anymore.

All I got from World Atlas was “The eastern and central parts of Africa host most of the hedgehogs”

The first result on Google was this:

https://hedgehogregistry.org/egyptian-hedgehog/

Which is SEO content farm-y, but it appears to be talking about this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-eared_hedgehog

Whose range seems to include northern Egypt.

This seems to be more relevant:

Please enjoy this adorable ancient Egyptian hedgehog! (https://66.media.tumblr.com/ce55cac251976999087b303b651954a1/tumblr_oqqwugzfNG1vb6gp6o1_640.jpg)

Was just about to find my photo of a faience hedgehog I saw in a gallery last weekend! To be fair, I studied Egyptology and had never thought about hedgehogs in Egypt until I saw this little blue hog, and it tickled me immensely.

I don't know this game, but it feels racist of SEGA to have picked another culture to use instead of the one actually native to the country (I'm guessing the designers liked the Mayan 'look' better and didn't care that they ignored the aborigines), so it doesn't feel racist to me to complain about that. Unless I'm just missing something? I shall be interested in what other people say.

I mean, in flashbacks in SA1, Tikal's father, the chieftan, was an active warmonger and I really think it would be a bad look to make a proxy of still-living people who were, IIRC, being actively genocided in recent history... That.

So yeah, I think it might have been a liiiiittle more than aesthetics and more "this culture is kinda long dead." Like, Pachamac's warmongering literally leads to the downfall of his clan. Like, the guy was bent on taking over the world and making it all His Kingdom and he had popular support! So uh, I think this would have been a why they're Mayan-inspired.

Thanks! I didn't know all that.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-02 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, Mayan people are still very much alive today.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-02 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, and if Knuckles' tribe had been based on modern Mayan people, that would have had a whole separate set of issues given the timing. But for better or worse, the modern Maya are more removed from their pre-colonized culture than Aboriginal Australians are from theirs.

But not the ancient Mayan culture they're based on. That's pretty different from actual tribes that currently exist and haven't changed nearly as much. You don't see a vast fucking empire of people with tiered pyramids and shit still running, do you?
